Aus berufspädagogischer Perspektive schrieb Herwig Blankertz mit Bildung im Zeitalter der großen Industrie einen Meilenstein für die Geschichtsschreibung des Dualen Systems. Obwohl Blankertz verschiedene Problemkreise beleuchtet, stellt er diese unter eine leitende Problemstellung: die Abwesenheit und Rückkehr der Pädagogik zur Berufsbildung. Innerhalb dieser Spanne rekonstruiert Blankertz die ökonomische und politische Entwicklung in Deutschland im 19. Jahrhundert, die zu einer bildungspolitischen und -ideologischen Situation führte, die letztlich von der Pädagogik nicht mehr hinterfragt wurde und von deren Realität sie ausging, als sie sich wieder für die Berufsbildung zuständig fühlte.
