Descripció
Sumari:When translating, there are numerous factors to take into consideration in the process of choosing the equivalents of proper names in the target language. Interpreting translation as a special form of interlingual and intercultural communication, we have to take into account both the language-internal and extralinguistic factors. Proper names raise a lot of questions on account of their special semantic structure, multiple functions and deep sociocultural embeddedness. The paper focuses on the interpretation of a linguistic expression as a proper name and the necessity of translating proper names differently from common words. It approaches its topic from a special and novel perspective: studying the cases of inadequate translation of proper names. The examples are taken from different genres, but mostly contemporary and everyday texts translated from other languages into Hungarian. Using these examples, the paper presents and analyses the differences and connections between the categories of proper names and common words and the types of translation mistakes arising from their misinterpretation. It presents and exemplifies the translation operations to follow in general, and characteristic potential mistake types in particular when proper names based on common words are translated.
