Riassunto:The volume contributes to the ongoing debate on the role of multi- and plurilingualism in international scientific communication and seeks to contribute to its possible and necessary conceptualisation in contemporary scientific contexts. The emphasis is placed on the interplay between the acquisition of knowledge and the collective and public dimensions of science. This relationship needs to be analysed as a genuine linguistic challenge, since it implies first and foremost an obligation of the language itself rather than of its speakers. From a linguistic perspective, this is exemplified by the processes of translocating scientific knowledge into different languages, contexts and institutions (mainly through the language of academic teaching); the development of specific technical and scientific domains (such as Medicine); the shaping of (multi- and plurilingual) competence in controversies and explanatory processes in teaching contexts; and (also from the perspective of a Philosophy of Knowledge) the interconnection of epistemic constraints and social strategies in the sciences.
