Zusammenfassung:This book is the first sociological study to analyze the identities, desires, and gender expressions of Chinese gay men from the perspective of “sexual citizenship” within contemporary Chinese society and global culture. The core material is based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the author between 1996 and 2008, including ninety life stories from Hong Kong, London, and mainland China. The book argues that the identities of gay men in these three locations—the flamboyant consumerist memba in Hong Kong, the urban gay men and money boys in mainland China, and the feminized golden boys in London—are influenced by transnational waves of global and local queer cultures. By rejecting the assumptions of global homogenization and local essentialism, the book offers groundbreaking insights into the gender and sexuality of Chinese gay men and establishes a new theoretical paradigm of “queer hybridity” for understanding transnational Chinese sexual identities, desires, and practices.
