Published Richard von Kühlmann war einer der fähigsten Diplomaten des deutschen Kaiserreichs. Im Kriegsjahr 1917 wurde er an die Spitze des Auswärtigen Amtes berufen. Ein Jahr später wurde er auf Druck der Obersten Heeresleitung (Ludendorff) und nationalistischer Kreise (darunter Stresemann) aus dem Amt gedrängt, da er seine Friedensneigung öffentlich aussprach. Kühlmanns Nachlass ist dem Bombenkrieg im Zweiten Weltkrieg zum Opfer gefallen. Ein kleiner Rest ist übriggeblieben. Der wichtigste Teil darin ist ein Memoirenwerk, das die Jahre 1904 bis 1918 umfasst. Es ist Anfang der 1930er Jahre entstanden, aber nicht mehr publiziert worden. Dagegen veröffentlichte Kühlmann 1948 ein zweites Erinnerungswerk, das aber wegen seines frühen Todes unbearbeitet war. Beide Werke verzahnen sich.
