Sie weisen den Leiden der Herrschenden einen sinnstiftenden Platz zu – als im Krieg Erprobte, als von Gott Geprüfte, als trotz Schmerzen Tüchtige etc. – und entwickeln daraus Erzählungen, die die normative Kraft ihres Körpers zur Geltung bringen und zwischen der Krise ihrer Gesundheit und ihrer Herrschaft vermitteln sollten. Bernhard Seidler examines the representations of sick rulers in Western Europe from the 15th to the 18th century. Whether pope, emperor or prince, these images present the powerful from their frail side. They emphasise the significance of their weak bodies for the political community and question the tension between being sick and in power. By showing rulers who have been amputated, are mentally ill or have eye damage, the pictures develop narratives that showcase their bodies with new normative standards. They give the suffering sovereigns a purposeful role – as those tested in war, tried by God, or hardworking despite pain. Thus, they figure as a means of communication between health and political crisis. |
