On the basis of the theory of collecting, intertwined with issues from the theory of art, museology, aesthetics, anthropology, political science, and history, Hanna Schreiber examines the ways of collecting and methods of exhibiting non-European artifacts, from the first private cabinets of curiosities in the 16th century to selected contemporary collections and museum exhibitions. Through an analysis of the most important theoretical writings and artistic events, she identifies turning points in the formation of the image of “primitive art” in the Western universe of art and museums, dominated by a Eurocentric perspective. |
