Descripció
Sumari:Throughout its 700-year lifespan, the Augustinian monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra was a highly important cultural, intellectual and religious centre, due in no small measure to its musical activity. Amongst the monastery’s vast surviving documental legacy, the General Library of the University of Coimbra holds a collection of sixteen manuscripts from the 17th century (called cartapácios in the Iberian speaking world), containing over 2500 pages of music, the greater part of which has not yet been studied and performed. We here present ten works from this rich collection – nine of which recorded for the first time –, recovered by the complementary means of research and performance. Written for Christmas, they not only display a musical and poetic quality that stands on a par with the best music then produced elsewhere in Europe, but also constitute a precious historical, cultural and even political portrait of the world and society at the dawn of the early modern period.
