| Summary: | Italian, alongside German, French and Romansh, is an official language of the Swiss Confederation. Given its minority status, federal institutional texts in Italian are almost always the result of translation. This volume examines the Italian language used in federal laws, analysing it from the perspective of linguistic clarity and adopting a micro-diachronic lens (1974–2018). The corpus-based quantitative and qualitative analysis of lexicon, syntax, textuality and the influence of translation has, first and foremost, highlighted the clarity of Swiss legislation, which is based on Huber’s principle of ‘popular legislation’. Furthermore, the filter of translation has proved to be a catalyst in the field of clear writing. Ultimately, the findings highlight the increased autonomy of Swiss institutional Italian as an official language and its capacity to serve as a model of linguistic clarity for other institutional contexts. |
